New Conservative acknowledges research which recognises the brain damage excessive alcohol consumption causes to young people under 20 years of age. It also recognises responsible consumption of alcohol requires a mature attitude all too often not present when a young person leaves school and starts a life of independence at 18 years old.
It is unfair to expose our young people to such vulnerability at such a young age.
New Conservative will raise the purchasing and drinking age for alcohol to 20 years old. Furthermore, New Conservative will implement policy to encourage responsible attitudes to the promotion, sale, supply and consumption of alcohol, increase the excise tax on alcohol to help pay for the substantial costs associated with the misuse of alcohol, and review the current accessibility of alcohol.
New Conservative will reinstate 'Drunk and Disorderly' as a criminal offence.
New Conservative will implement a user pays system for drivers under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Drivers found over the legal alcohol limit and/or under the influence of illegal substances will be required to pay all attributed costs, such as police time and testing costs. In addition, billing those whom are hospitalised through alcohol and/or drug related incidents, including for the use of an ambulance.
