Roger was born in Tauranga in 1969 and undertook secondary education at Napier Boy’s High School and Stratford High School, attaining University Entrance.
Roger joined the New Zealand Army in 1987 spending his first year at Massey University where he commenced a Bachelor of Business Studies. He completed Officer Training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, Australia, graduating in July 1989.
Roger has held a variety of appointments throughout his military career commencing as a junior officer in the Second First Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment based in Burnham. He spent much of his career teaching leadership and military skills to officers and soldiers here in New Zealand, in Papua New Guinea and in Afghanistan. He also worked extensively with the Territorial soldiers in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions to prepare them for operational service.
Roger currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and is serving as the Executive Officer of the New Zealand Defence Force Estate and Infrastructure Division which has been allocated $2.1 Billion over the next 10 – 15 years by the Government to regenerate the aging Estate nationwide.
Roger has deployed on operations three times: to East Timor as the Officer Commanding, Support Company, New Zealand Battalion 5 and twice to Afghanistan – in 2004 as a Patrol Commander CRIB 4 and again in 2014/15 as a mentor at the Afghan National Army Officer Academy in Kabul. Roger was appointed an Additional Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2005 and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal by the Commanding General of the US Army in 2006 for his service in Afghanistan.
Roger is a graduate of the United States Marine Corps Command and Staff College Distance Education Program Class of 2011.
Roger has spoken at two Army Symposiums, addressing the importance of Cultural Understanding. He was a Moderator at the 10th International Lessons Learned Conference in 2017 and had an article published in the Third Edition of the Army Journal – Building Partner Capacity, an Afghan Experience.
Roger has worked in the private sector for six years. Firstly as a consultant for a private training company delivering team development and leadership courses, as a Kiwifruit Pack House Manager and as the owner and operator of a building related installation franchise.
Roger is married to Laura and between them they have five children, Toby, Jake, Jessica, Aimee and Daniel. He is a Christian and his interests include international affairs, swimming, cycling and reading.
